Aluminum Cylinder Head Damage

One of the things TIG welding does better than any other technology is repair aluminum castings. In this case, a cylinder head exhaust valve seat boss loosened from use and the seat fell out, causing the casting to become damaged. In order to build up the boss so that it can be re-machined for a new valve seat, it first has to be ground, as shown in this photo from a project to repair an aluminum cylinder head in Chapter 4: TIG Welding.

Although author Jerry Uttrachi doesn't give precise instructions on how to perform this repair, in Weld Like a Pro, he does take you through the process so you get an idea of how it's done and how TIG welding is used to do this kind of repair. Photo: Jerry Uttrachi.
