How to Rebuild and Modify Rochester Quadrajet Carburetors
The Rochester Quadrajet Carburetor has been a bit of an enigma for me ever since I was old enough to know what it was.
On the one hand, I was told it was both efficient and provided the best drivability because of the ability to fine-tune the fuel curve.
On the other hand, I was told that it was a pain in the ass to tune and that once it wore out, a rebuild wasn't going to be able to fix all its problems and return it to its former glory.
Thankfully, Cliff Ruggles — of Cliff's High Performance in Mount Vernon, OH — wrote this amazing book: How to Rebuild and Modify Rochester Quadrajet Carburetors. After reading it, I firmly understand why both those statements are true and how to resolve the latter — which is a good thing, because I don't just need to re-gasket the Q-Jet on the 283 in my Grandfather's El Camino, I need to completely restore it.
